Nothing is more American than a RedBone Coonhound!! Redbones started here in America around 1902
Smart, athletic, loving, affectionate, easy to care for, rugged and very handsome, what more could someone ask for in a pet?
Coonhounds(of many types) are often over-looked as family pets for popular breeds like labradors and golden retrievers or designer doodles. What potential pet owners dont realize is how sweet a hound can be and how easy to train!! Let's face it any dog that can go work on his own all day while a hunter sits around drinkng beer , has got to have some brains!!
Labs and goldens can be great pets, but their high energy and desire to chew on stuff all day can be quite annoying. Coonhounds are ready to play when you are and they are ready to be couch potatoes when you are. They are usually sensitive dogs that easily listen to discipline, where as many a doodle and lab and golden need a 2 by 4 stick just to catch their attention and listen.
Coonhounds soft , senstive nature makes them easy to walk on a leash. They HATE being scolded so it doesnt take much to get them to listen.
Are there downsides to owning a coonhound? Well, I guess so. If you don't like the sound of a bay rather than a yippee bark, you won't like a coonhound. Some coonhounds can be quite vocal especially outside, so if you live in the city and leave your dog outside, you may find some neighbors area bit irritated. The good thing is that baying sound many folks like to hear, so your neighbrs may cut you some slack...more so than the small yippee bark of some dogs that sound is like finger nails on a chalkboard. Coonhounds can be quite determined if their nose catches a cool scent, a leash or a good fence is a must with them. Coonhounds can be bed hogs..you may need a bigger bed if you get one as a pet. They LOVE people and soft beds!!
